Happiness

We were born to be happy. It is a God given right. Yet, we aren’t taking advantage of that right, and long standing happiness somehow seems  to elude us. We conjure up reason after reason, excuse after excuse as to why we can’t find happiness. But, are we getting in our own way? I believe we are.

We seem to be unhappier as a people, as a nation rather. So what are we doing to ourselves that’s depleting our happiness hours. Well, a number of factors are to blame, and our selves should be at the top of the list. We create situations in our lives that lead to stress and eventual unhappiness. Here are some examples of some of the things we might have done at some point in our lives.

♦ We spend more than we can afford.
♦ We get ourselves into relationships that we know are unhealthy.
♦ We assume jobs that we know before hand we’ll hate.
♦ We eat foods that we know are not good for us and will have adverse effects.
♦ We spend too much time watching television and in front of computers. (i’m guilty of the computer bit).
♦ We say things we don’t mean.
♦ We assume responsibilities we can’t fulfill.
♦ We try to please others all the time (we are yessers).
♦ We’re waiting for the perfect time, perfect job, perfect mate, perfect opportunity.

….and so much more. Then we end up unhappy, and we wonder why.

So, how do you create happiness. Well, for starters you need to live in the moment; in the now. Let go of the past and stop obsessing about the future.

Enjoy each moment that you’re blessed with. Embrace each day that you open your eyes to see. Let tomorrow be. Live authentically, and happiness will follow.

Consider these 10 tips to increase your happiness hours:

Meditate and pray. Through meditation and prayer you’ll allow yourself the opportunity to be centered and focused, and manifest happiness into your life. Prayer and spirituality lays the foundations for faith, which will give you the confidence to leap in the direction of  your happiness.

Eat happy foods. Consume foods that will boost your happy hormones and decrease the stressful ones. I call them stress less foods.

Inhale happiness into your body. Breathe deep. Cells need oxygen to make energy and effectively carry out their metabolic activity, and deep breaths provide cells with oxygen for the mitochondria (the cell’s energy making molecule)  the cell to make energy molecules, which the cell uses to absorb nutrients and release metabolic waste such as carbon dioxide. The very act will decrease the stressful hormones in your body and bring a sense of calm and peace.

Practice happy thoughts. Being positive and abstaining from negativity is a sure fire route to a happier you.

Do more of what makes you happy. How do you feel when you are doing something that you absolutely love? Now imagine yourself doing that all the time. Imagine that it’s your 9 -5.  Won’t you just be the happiest person alive? Well, do it. Do what makes you feel happy. Think of a way. Where there is a will there is always a way.

Be contagious. Share your happiness story with others.There is no greater feeling than sharing your happiness story with others. The contagious spirit will bring nothing but happiness to your life and the life of others. The joy of helping others is an amazing reward. So go ahead. Be happy and tell as many people as you can how you achieved your happiness. It’s infectious.

Be authentically you. Love and accept yourself for who you are. No Buts.

Practice gratitude. The more you practice gratitude the more you’ll find to be grateful for, and the more fulfilled you’ll become. Be grateful for and to the people who you love and cherish; the people who mean something to you.  Most of all be grateful for the gift of your life.

Practice forgiveness. Hatred holds you stagnant and stuck in the past. Conversely, forgiveness will keep you present and centered. Resentment is like a virus that spreads through your body, from the inside out,  and will destroy any chance of present and future happiness. Recognize the past for what it is, the past. Gone. Reconcile with it and move on, for it holds no power over you.

Take Time For Self. Do something every day that is loving toward your body and gives you the opportunity to enjoy the sensations of your body” Golda Poretsky. I can never get enough of this quote. I perfectly sums up how we should treat our bodies.  Practice self-care techniques that will allow you to honor yourself. Be still. Walk on the beach. Take a dance class. Read a good book.
